Israel warns time is running out before it launches strike on Iran

What Really Happened

One account claims that Israel's security agencies have concluded that the turmoil predicted from a strike, and the likely response from Tehran, has been widely exaggerated. However, a senior British official told The Independent that the hierarchy of the intelligence service, Mossad, and the armed forces continued to have deep trepidation about conflict in the region.
Speaking at the Davos economic summit yesterday, the Israeli Defence Minister, Ehud Barak, yesterday warned that a situation could be rapidly reached when even "surgical" military action could not block the Tehran regime from getting the bomb. "We will know early enough whether the Iranians are ready to give up their nuclear weapons," following measures such as the recently announced EU oil embargo, he said.
Webmaster's Commentary:
Memo to Ehud Barak: sir, you know, as well as you know your own name, that the IDF is capable of starting such a military conflict, but will need US military assistance to finish it.
And that, sir, infuriates me and thinking Americans no end. You, and those in your camp, who swear that war is the only answer here, are dead wrong. There is no Iranian weapons program.
Iran, as a signatory to the NNPT, is doing every bit of their nuclear research under the very watchful eye of the IAEA. Your country refuses to become a signatory to this treaty, and refuses to allow your nuclear weapons sites to be inspected.
That you believe American blood and money are the irrelevant, but necessary, sacrifices upon the altar of ultimate Israeli hegemony in the Middle East is not acceptable.
And apparently, you haven't received, or are choosing to ignore, ultimatums by Russia and China, both nuclear-armed nations, that they are ready to enter such a war on the side of Iran.
Also apparently, you have written off the rather significant Jewish population in Iran, who have chosen to stay in Iran rather than emigrate to Israel.
If US leadership were actually smart, they would let you pursue such a war on your own, with absolutely no military assistance whatsoever.
Unfortunately, however, intelligence, and the US pursuit of foreign policy, has never had an extremely close relationship. Those in Tel Aviv who lust after such a war with Iran must be ecstatic right now.
But Minister Barak, I would very strongly caution you to be careful what you wish for. The potential horrific unintended consequences here loom large, as Russia's Sergei Lavrov has said recently.
